Magic Wok open under new management

Magic Wok went under new ownership as of March 4, 2019. The new owners are Tom Nasghima and Peter Yeung. Prior, the restaurant was owned and operated by Mary Turner. Magic Wok closed in December of 2018, with no plans of it re-opening.

“The landlord of the Magic Wok building knew me personally, so he got ahold of me to come to Wayne to do a trial run of working at Magic Wok,” Yeung said.

It was an easy process getting back into the restaurant business for Yeung; he’d been in the business for 30 years. Nasghima and Yeung are currently leasing the restaurant from the landlord of the building.

“The process to opening under a new management was to get a business license and health permit. My partner, Tom, was out here to help permit all of that,” Yeung said. “We did whatever was necessary to re-open the restaurant.”

According to Yeung, the new management has been good, despite only being open for two weeks.

“We are in the process of waiting and seeing what will happen,” Yeung said. “We have a one-year lease at Magic Wok. The whole experience is different for us, since we are from the California area, so we want to try it out and we will go from here to see how it manages.

“We will manage it on our own, it will just be hard work. I just want to make sure we are doing the right thing ourselves.”

Prior to the new owners, Magic Wok was owned by Turner, her family and a few others within a span of 24 years. Turner’s family moved from Lincoln to Wayne to open a Chinese restaurant.

“My family took a risk of coming to Wayne because 95 percent of businesses fail in a year or less,” Turner said. “If it was easy, then everyone would do it.”

In Lincoln, the business environment was extremely competitive and proved difficult for Mary and her family.

“There was too much competition when it came to Chinese restaurants in Lincoln, so we moved to Wayne, Nebraska,” Turner said. “Wayne did not have a Chinese restaurant, so we moved here to open one.”

Turner’s parents owned Magic Wok since Dec. 12, 1994, when she moved to Wayne with her parents as a freshman in high school.

“My parents owned Magic Wok until July of 2005, and then they retired,” Turner said. “Magic Wok went through four different owners until I tried to run the business myself.”

In April of 2014 Turner and her mother managed Magic Wok together. Her mother trained her in all aspects of running a restaurant.

“I was her apprentice,” Turner said. “It took me six months to be able to flip a wok correctly, one year to learn what goes in everything and how to make it, two years to perfect it and in three years I took over. I owned and ran Magic Wok for a year and eight months.”

With that knowledge it taught Turner how to manage the restaurant on her own.

“The customers loved when I made sure everything was correct and tasted sauces before going out,” Turner said. “That’s one thing I learned from watching cooking shows like ‘Master Chef.’”

Turner would make sure the business was successful even when she was exhausted.

“I always liked to ask how everything was because I care,” Turner said. “If I didn’t care, then it would show and never get solved. When customers have an issue then it was going to get taken care of and I was not going to let it go ignored.

“It was hard to get customer satisfaction if employees were going against the customers just because they did not want to do what was necessary. Making customer satisfaction was making customers happy so that they would come back.”

With her relentless dedication to customer satisfaction and managing the restaurant on her own, Turner hit her breaking point.

“I couldn’t run the business anymore because a good portion of the business was solely done by myself,” Turner said. “I couldn’t do it all anymore. Stay late then get up early to do it all over again. I was always getting sick because I wore my body out.”

With Magic Wok under new management, it is still in the same location on 117 W 3rd St #1, Wayne, Nebraska 68787.

Siebert loves the new Magic Wok

he new and improved Magic Wok has my heart. I LOVE Chinese – like I’m obsessed. I only went to the old Magic Wok once and I never went back because it was so disappointing, but the new ownership has me head over heels in love.

I was so skeptical at first: the building looks the same, smells the same, pretty much everything appears the same. The food, however, let me tell you IS NOT THE SAME. It is amazing, it is incredible, I can’t write enough superlatives, because these new owners are “heart eyes” for days.

The special on Monday was peanut butter chicken, so your peanut-butter-loving-girl obviously had to try it. The chicken was about two fingers thick and about three inches long, so you can do the measuring on your hands if you so dare. There were probably about 10 or 15 of those chicken blobs, so the portions are large, plus add the two heaping scoops of fried rice.

The strips of chicken was dipped and fried in a batter that made them a golden crisp on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. The crispness was so satisfying, I legit could not stop eating my food. I have a food baby for proof. The peanut butter sauce was warm and gooey, smothering the chicken in a warm blanket. Green peppers, onions, and carrots were intermixed with the chicken, making it oh so flavorful.

I’m a veggie freak, so I loved the different flavors and textures the vegetables brought to the table (literally). My boyfriend on the other hand, picked out the vegetables only eating the chicken. To each their own, but I recommend eating EVERYTHING.

The fried rice had peas and carrots mixed in, because what fried rice doesn’t have good vegetables mixed in? The rice was sticking together, which I didn’t like because then the rice was a little mushier than I prefer. Having two big scoops of rice was much appreciated so I can’t complain on portion control.

The BF got sweet and sour chicken, so it pretty much looked the exact same as mine, but it had red sauce all over it. I only had a small bite of his chicken, but I can say it was a close second to my peanut butter chicken. It was very sweet, hence the name, and very good all around.

I can honestly say I did not leave Magic Wok hungry. I had two to-go boxes (because my boyfriend expects me to be his human food disposal) for even more meals later in the week, praise up. Just a heads up, it reheats like a boss. The food tastes exactly the same as it did two days ago, it just lost some of its crispness due to soaking in the sauce.

The price was a little above $20 which was kind of pricey for a Monday night date, but for the mounds of food we got, it wasn’t too bad.

Have I even mentioned the customer service yet? I love going to restaurants where the workers actually like what they do and take pride in it, and I definitely got that vibe from them. The owner even came out when we were finishing up and asked us how we liked our food and how the peanut butter chicken was, just because it was so different.

The food was fast, it was steaming hot and fresh, the people were so friendly, I cannot even comprehend how blessed Wayne is with the new Magic Wok owners. Highly recommend that Chinese Food Monday’s should become a thing for everyone.

Reviews for "Magic Wok: A Haven for Food Lovers in Wayne, NE"

1. John - 1 star - I recently ordered takeout from Magic Wok in Wayne and it was a complete disappointment. The food was bland and lacked flavor, the portions were small, and it did not live up to my expectations. The General Tso's chicken was dry and overcooked, and the fried rice was tasteless. I will not be ordering from this restaurant again.
2. Sarah - 2 stars - I had high hopes for Magic Wok after hearing good things about it, but I was let down. The service was slow and the staff seemed disinterested. The food was mediocre at best - the orange chicken was overly sweet and greasy, and the lo mein was too oily. I was also disappointed with the lack of vegetarian options on the menu. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for quality Chinese food.
3. Mike - 2 stars - I had a terrible experience at Magic Wok in Wayne. The food was cold and the presentation was sloppy. The sweet and sour pork had a strange aftertaste and the egg rolls were soggy. The prices were quite high for the poor quality of the food, and I found it to be a waste of money. I would not recommend dining at this restaurant as there are much better options available in the area.
4. Emily - 1 star - What a disappointment! I ordered takeout from Magic Wok and it was simply awful. The fried rice was soggy and lacked any flavor, the Mongolian beef was tough and chewy, and the soup tasted like it came straight from a can. The portions were small for the price and overall, I felt like I wasted my money. There are definitely better Chinese restaurants in Wayne that I would recommend over Magic Wok.
